What is a METAR?
A METAR is a routine aerodrome weather report. It is usually issued every 30 or 60 minutes and uses a compact international format for wind, visibility, weather, clouds, temperature, dew point and pressure.
Pilots read METARs before and during flight planning to understand current field conditions. Flight simulators such as Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane also use METAR data to reproduce real-world weather.
