How to Calculate Fuel Required for a VFR Flight

A simple VFR fuel planning workflow covering time en route, fuel burn, taxi fuel and reserve fuel.

Open the fuel planner

Fuel planning starts with time, not distance. Convert the route distance into time en route using expected groundspeed, multiply that time by fuel flow, then add taxi fuel and legal or personal reserve.

Basic formula

Trip fuel equals time en route multiplied by fuel flow. If the flight is 250 NM, groundspeed is 110 kt and fuel flow is 10 gallons per hour, time en route is about 2 hours 16 minutes and trip fuel is about 22.7 gallons.

Then add reserve. A 45-minute reserve at 10 gallons per hour is 7.5 gallons. Add taxi fuel separately so it does not silently eat into your reserve.

Plan with margins

Forecast wind, mixture setting, climb time, routing changes and holding can all change fuel burn. A clean calculation is the starting point, not the finish line.

Operational check

Before real flight, compare the AVIO estimate with the aircraft POH or AFM, current regulations, fuel availability, alternates and your personal minimums. Fuel is one of the easiest risks to plan conservatively.

Operational note

AVIO is for training, planning support and simulation. For a real flight, verify weather, aircraft performance and planning decisions against official sources, your POH or AFM, NOTAMs, charts, ATC and instructor guidance.
